The Asphalt Installation Process

Regardless of the finished pavement, the first few steps of a paving job are nearly always the same:

01. Assessing

The site is examined for potential problems such as drainage issues and insufficient support. The appropriate type of pavement will be selected based on the considerations listed above, and a plan will be made for the remaining steps.

02. Clearing

The site is cleared of existing paving or vegetation in preparation for the following steps.

03. Grading

The site is made level, and graded with the appropriate slope to *encourage proper water drainage (bearing any pre-existing building or surrounding road grade conditions). The foundational ground is compressed so that it will form a secure base for the paving material.

04. Asphalt Paving

Depending on the type of pavement installed, the next steps will differ slightly. The next steps are those which follow for an asphalt installation:

04.A. Laying the Base Material

The foundational ground is covered with a thick, sturdy layer – usually gravel, though sometimes other material may be used, such as a different type of asphalt. This is compacted to create a stable platform for the asphalt above.

04.B. Laying Asphalt

The asphalt,(a mixture of petroleum base, sand, and crushed rock), will be formulated specifically for the client’s needs. The sizes and types of crushed rock used in the asphalt will vary based on the purpose of the paved site. This asphalt will be machine-laid atop the foundation creating a durable surface for parking, walking, etc.

05. Compacting and Finishing

The asphalt is compacted with a barrel roller, and the edges are finished for an ideal shape that will look good, support weight, and direct runoff, then left to dry until cured.

Some projects call for a different application, these cases include the parking lots that have been asphalted for some years and are past the point of patching or sealcoating. Typically these projects have existing asphalt that needs to be removed to install a fresh new layer for years of use in the future. These projects call for an application we refer to as “milling” out the old asphalt where a large machine is brought to the job site to grind and remove the top surface of the existing lot, whether it be around the edges or the full lot, we will provide a costume fit plan for your particular parking lot to ensure new asphalt will fit snuggly against any sidewalks, roadways, stone work, or concrete surrounds. Once the existing asphalt is milled up and hauled away we continue the asphalt installation and compaction to ensure a well fit and structurally sound new asphalt parking lot.
